History of Golden Gate Bridge
Crossing the passage of the Golden Gate from San Francisco to the Marin Headlands for 1.7 miles is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge, which can be easily identified by its International Orange color. It is designed by Joseph B. Strauss and completed in 1937. The Golden Gate Bridge is the most internationally recognized symbol and charm of San Francisco, California. The bridge was built at a cost of $35 million in principal and $39 million in interest and 11 workers’ lives. When the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in May 1937 was completed, Chief Engineer Joseph B. Strauss wrote a poem entitled “The Mighty Task is Done.” The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate passage, the mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. This was once called “the bridge that couldn’t be built,” today it is one the seven wonders of the modern world. This magnificent span, perhaps San Francisco’s most famous landmark, opened in 1937 after a four-year struggle against harsh winds, fog, rock and disloyal tides.
The American Society of Civil Engineers declared the suspension bridge one of The Wonders of the Modern World, and Formers Travel Guide considers it “possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed bridge in the world.” When it was completed, the Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world. Now it no longer holds that title but is famous for its distinct reddish-orange color. The color was specifically chosen to make the bridge more visible and different in the thick fog that rolls through the channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

The single-suspension span is anchored by twin towers that reach skyward 746 feet and was once taller than any building in San Francisco. To support the suspended roadway, two cables, each more than 7,000 feet in length and both containing 80,000 miles of wire stretch over the top of the towers and are rooted in concrete anchorages on shore. More than ten years in planning due to the formidable opposition, but only four years in actual construction, the Golden Gate Bridge brought the communities of San Francisco and Marin counties closer together. It is a beautiful place to visit and enjoy indeed. You will find an entirely new world at Golden Gate Bridge.

Some drawbacks of Golden Gate Bridge
There are some somber aspects of this charming and fascinating bridge. It is a bridge where a large number of people have committed suicide. Some of the drawbacks are given below:
- Sadly, the Golden Gate Bridge is as notorious for the number of individuals who have jumped to their deaths from its towering frame as it is for its beauty and elegant engineering.
- A safety railing to prevent suicides is installed. The original bridge design by Strauss called for fencing over five ft. as to be “suicide-proof.” Morrow changed that and lowered the railing.
- World War I veteran Harold Wobber, the first bridge suicide, purportedly says, “This is where I get off,’ and then jumps to his death.
- According to the Bridge Rail Foundation, nearly 1,600 people have committed suicide by jumping off the bridge. The average number of bridge suicides is three per month.
- San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge Board of Directors collectively approves a funding package totaling $76 million to erect and fund suicide prevention net on the bridge.
